Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the design, construction and maintenance of electrical traffic control and management systems and related devices
  • Performs and/or directs administrative activities as required (e.g. updating computerized and manual contracts, maintaining and updating files, inventories, repairs histories related to assignments; drafting contracts and specifications, calculating engineering estimates, ordering supplies and equipment; assisting in budget preparation and in tracking annual expenditures)
  • Plans and coordinates the installation of electrical traffic control and management device equipment
  • Checks and monitors consultant/contractor work, job site construction, maintenance of electrical traffic control and management devices for completeness, accuracy and conformance to City of Toronto standards and specifications
  • Assists in setting technical standards and specifications for electrical traffic control and management device systems
  • Investigates, operates, analyzes and reports on electrical traffic control and management devices systems
  • Attends pre-construction and job site meetings to discuss progress, resolve problems (e.g. completion dates, finalization, non-compliance)
  • Maintains up-to-date records for as-built drawings as project progresses
  • Assists with preparation of engineering designs and construction contracts
  • Enters, edits, updates and analyzes data on microcomputer, distributing output as required
  • Performs design and drafting work, prepares and checks map data and products using Computer Assistant Design and Drawing (CADD) input information
  • Prepares, reads and interprets technical drawings
  • Conducts field inspections and evaluates condition of facilities to ensure proper traffic control/management procedures are in place

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Graduate in an Engineering Technician/Technologist program or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience
  2. Considerable experience in engineering technology, specifically in the principles and practices of electrical traffic control devices and transportation engineering.
  3. Considerable experience in drafting and designing with CADD, preferably through the use of MicroStation software.
  4. Experience in the application of safety regulations as it relates to traffic control.
  5. Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” driver’s license and have daily use of a personal vehicle.

You must also have:

  • Ability in directing the work of others and coordinating multi-discipline projects concurrently.
  • Ability to effectively organize records and data and prepare sound technical reports, specifications and calculations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with engineering and technical personnel at all levels and the public.
  • Significant knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the regulations that apply to this work including confined space entry, traffic control, WHMIS, etc.
  • Considerable knowledge of traffic signals, pedestrian crossovers (PXO), flashing beacons and illuminated signs, their installation, operation, and maintenance.
  • Considerable knowledge of CCTV cameras, Variable Message Signs, Vehicle Detection Systems, communications equipment and infrastructure, their installation, operation, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and equipment configuration and the ability to use standard application software such as spreadsheet, database, word processing, and drafting and designing programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and contract documents.
  • Knowledge of construction methods as it relates to the responsibilities of the position.
  • With the appropriate safety precautions, must be able to tolerate dusty, noisy and odorous conditions.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and work independently.
  • Familiarity with City of Toronto Standards and Specifications and OPSS documents would be an asset.
  • Membership or eligibility for membership in the Ontario Association of Engineering, Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) would be an asset.
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Certification Program (Levels I and II) and experience working with NEMA phase based controllers would be an asset.
  • IP Networking (routing and switching) knowledge would be an asset.
