We are currently in the dance studio working on a new dance creation. Fusing contemporary Indigenous dance with athleticism, Miigis explores the catalysts for the Anishinaabe (Ojibway) journey and the seven prophecies marked by ‘miigis’. In Anishnaabe culture, the miigis shell represents “the perfect breath” of life, and informs the origin story of our travel narrative from the Atlantic coast to the Great Lakes to the place where “food grows on water”, known as wild rice, or Manoomin (pronounced Ma-no-min).

Along with seven musicians and singers, the music created for Miigis explores stories from the Great Lakes and water trade routes. The Anishinaabe called them Gitchigami “Shining Big Sea Water.” Lake Ontario, Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie; together they form the largest freshwater system on the planet.

Miigis will be presented in Toronto on September 24 – 25, 2016 at 3:30 pm on both days at Fort York’s On Common Ground Festival and the Toronto Non-GMO Coalition’s community-based Farm to Fork celebration for family friendly, socially conscious, feast of food and culture. 250 Fort York Boulevard, Toronto. Free.

Watch for Miigis as part of the Canada 150th celebrations on July 1 – 4, 2017 in Toronto.
